Sophie Binder points out that at the onset of the pandemic, we all started to live in a different world. Mother Nature, reminding us of its power, was sending us a harsh call to reality, asking us to hit a reset button. Isolation became a daily truth, and we all had to find ways to cope. Art has always been this outlet for Sophie. In March 2020, her mom passed away at a distance of more than 4,000, adding to the emotional burden. She found refuge in the daily discipline–and joy–of sketching daily. It let her look at each little thing in a new light, always sketchbook in hand–a simple daily chronicle of very unusual times. She first thought she would try to keep up with it for a month. Then it was a year … then the days of total isolation were no more, but no matter, it had become something somewhat sustaining, a comfort, a small daily sense of accomplishment. Then it was two years … then three … then four. It has now been 1785 days and counting…. She will show slides and talk about the exercise of this daily routine–personal and somewhat more “global,” and some of its unexpected outcomes. She will also share some of her sketchbooks.
