Holiday Portrait Photography Made Simple with John Kerans

With Photojournalist and Instructor John Kerans

Thursday, December 3rd, 2020
Online: 6pm – 7:15pm CST

This course explains how to create compelling “on location” portraits – at home, at work, at play – without the need for a studio or expensive equipment. Learn why a “long lens” makes faces look great, and find out how to adapt your existing lenses for portrait shoots. Discover how to separate your subjects from the background by using a shallow focus to replicate the look of a Hollywood motion picture. Identify the best angles from which to shoot in order to make your subjects – young or old – look their best. Take advantage of available light and practice how to supplement what’s available by using an external flash, a cheap reflector, or both.

John Kerans– a life-long journalist – is a graduate of the Army’s photojournalism school who later earned his BA in photojournalism at the University of Minnesota. During a decade as a Reservist, assigned to the Army Public Affairs office in Los Angeles, he learned how to take “on location portraits” without studio lights or fancy equipment, a no-frills approach he likes to share with others. In civilian life, John’s journalism career has included stints as a reporter in Chicago, an assignment editor in Minneapolis, a TV news director in Des Moines.

Since 2015, John has been an instructor for the Digital Photography Certificate Program offered by Continuing Education at STLCC, Saint Louis Community College. Prior to STLCC, he taught at Arizona State, Scottsdale College and the University of Kansas. John holds a community college teaching certificate from Arizona State, and earned an MA in advertising at Lindenwood University.

Since 2013, John has edited a web-based photography magazine for beginners – available online at digitalcamera101.org – which has attracted 26,000 followers and accumulated 12-million page views.
